How Are Sedimentary Rocks Formed?

Rain falls in the mountains.  The rain washes tiny bits of rock into the river or stream.  The river moves toward the ocean, tearing off more bits of rock as it flows.  Once the river reaches the ocean, the flow speed slows down.  This causes the fine particles of sand, silt and mud to drop out onto the sea floor.

The particles are then distributed by waves and currents as beaches, offshore sand bars, or deeper ocean sediments.
